WHAT, WHY

Science and technology can’t change the world on their own. Climate scientists have the ability to delve into the why and the how, building a wealth of evidence and research on the environments that shape the climate as it shifts. But how much of an impact can be made by them alone? Sofia Hadjiosif tells us this with an unwavering clarity. It is evidence and research coupled with creativity and design, a united approach, that will allow for an impact.

This is the fundamental thinking that lies behind Terra Movement, founded by Sofia in 2020. Terra Movement is a platform and route into social impact, sustainability and artivism as mutually inclusive. Detaching from narratives which have focused on statistics or corporate agendas alone, this approach inspires, designs and works on a more symbiotic level. The three elements which push Terra Movement forward adopt this holistic focus - an outlook that sees environments thrive, interconnected inclusively-designed systems, and a balance between planet and people.

We need to be aware of everything. Why do we think and work in the ways that we do? Sofia dissects this during our conversation. Our habits, our businesses, our society. So that we can create and design better. So that we can inspire action and change that breaks down environmental challenges. Terra Movement intends to “show people that they can be involved, regardless of their creative practice”. Each has a different take and role and each is as necessary as the other, Sofia tells us. A fusion of art and design that inspires innovative ideas, and is inspired by responding to the climate and environment.

ART, ACTIVISM, CREATIVITY

“We’re losing creativity in society generally.” As Sofia said this to us with a pensive look, a different conversation arose. Confined by the same Instagram recommendations and a massive imbalance within creative practises of any kind, Terra Movement intends to diminish these boundaries. Sofia mentions Fuse, a platform disrupting this narrative also, by amplifying the vast works and voices of creatives of colour, with one of the several engaging chapters based in Manchester (as Terra Movement are). The social media algorithms, accompanied by their own boundaries, are what Sofia works against. Researching and seeking out more to avoid being restricted to the same small circles that dominate within creative industries.

Sofia thinks about the word creativity for longer than anticipated, before making another reflective comment. “It’s almost suppressed by society and the world”. Expressing, creating, designing.

For Sofia, whose own works in graphics and motion graphics are always environmentally and socially led, Terra Movement curates it’s selection with the same principles in mind. An array of mediums, but with more attention towards newer, hybrid and wider forms such as motion, animation and sound. Works by @angie_creativist and @styngvi are what Sofia can think of in the moment that align with these ideas. Terra Movement’s past illustration challenge brought these ideas together in harmony, with an abundance of visually rich responses from those “out there who had things to say through their art”.

TERRA/EARTH, ENVIRONMENT, CHALLENGES, CIRCULAR

We seem to be disconnected from the environment, and from the earth also. For Sofia this comes to mind straight away, the narrow thinking we have in relation to nature and the state of the environment. Here it’s key for designers who are creating and developing to respond to this and to change models of thinking. One model revolves around the circular and closed loop, something we can replicate from systems we see within nature. With a detached and uninformed connection to what happens and what goes on within cycles of making, breaking and repurchasing, this is one aspect that is imperative for creatives. Sofia believes all designers should become climate designers. Adapting practises towards circular designing, circular chains and minimising waste. Moving away from a throw away culture that is deeply embedded, and away from linear models that have exacerbated environmental challenges.

Collaboration and creative initiatives are core elements of what is upcoming for Terra Movement. Sofia is clear on that, and on exploring climate futures through bridging art, activism and impact. If this conversation is anything to go by, the route that Terra Movement continues to take will be intriguing and emboldening.

Sofia Hadjiosif is an artist/activist and founder of Terra Movement. A fusion of art, graphics and motion graphics which are environmentally and socially-led make up Sofia’s practice, and creative activism drives both Sofia and Terra Movement.
