ARANA
PROJECT

ARTIST Rocío Ricagno
FERAL ECOLOGIES
Human and Non-Human
LOCATION San Fernando Islands, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

CONCEPT Arana Project documents life along the Gobernador Arana Canal, located in the lower part of the Paraná Delta in San Fernando, Buenos Aires. Once a prolific portion of land involved in the production of fruits, wood and wicker, its human and nonhuman inhabitants have now been left behind as a consequence of politico-economic decisions. As vegetation makes it advance on abandoned buildings, the remaining local community struggles with unemployment and the devaluation of local agricultural products, exacerbated by contamination, food sovereignty, and limited access to the main city. Ricagno contemplates the changing relationship between the land and its inhabitants, and the community’s decision to remain in a territory, which, over the decades, has been made both prosperous and hostile to human life at the hands of economic policy.
