BLACK
WATERS

ARTIST Mateo Vargas
FERAL ECOLOGIES Humans, Fish, Insects, Birds, Fruit, Trees, Crops
LOCATION Cuautitlán, State of Mexico
CONCEPT In the Cuautitlán River, increased urban development and industrial activity have poisoned what was once clean river water. The remaining few clean water sources in the area have been seized and monopolised by corporate entities including Nestle and Coca Cola. Together with their family, Vargas stitches together a multi-generational oral history of the river, and the changes that pollution has wrought on their community. The film centres on matriarchal histories, tracing the memory of land, nature, and water, and their relations to the ongoing climate crisis.
