FERAL ECOLOGIES Feral Pigeons, City Doves
LOCATION Singapore
CONCEPT A group of youths don flamboyant headgear, juxtaposed against fantastical, saturated sets that reconstruct a quintessential Singaporean estate. Here, where corridors and stairwells have become hostile and contested spaces under constant watch, and pigeons undergo frequent licensed exterminations. Created with welding masks sourced from Boon Lay, a working-class neighbourhood, the headgear makes their wearers hyper visible to supervision, while also distracting from what they might not wish to disclose. Rahim and Guo draw an uncanny parallel between urban pigeons and marginalised folks in Singapore, whose bodies are constantly navigating and code switching precariously in between guilt, shame and desire under surveillance in a hostile environment.
