Elle/They, Hanging by a Wire
By Jana Charl

Jana Charl, a native of Los Angeles and dual US-Swiss citizen, explores a variety of media and techniques that blur the boundaries of craft, commercial art, and fine art. She reimagines objects destined for landfills to address sustainability.
Languages: Spanish, English
"Elle" is a neopronoun in Spanish as an alternative to the third-person gender-specific pronouns él (he) and ella (she), similar to "they" in English. I painted "Elle" on the backside of a found oil painting, and I was inspired by a symmetrical motif in Andalusian tiles. As a means to circumvent language barriers and focus on the visual experience, I’ve created a language of graphic bars that are woven into my artwork. The graphic bars are "blanks" representing the words of the narration; viewers are invited to fill them in with individualized interpretations.

"Hanging by a Wire" is a wordplay on the assembled found objects, a speaker grille, and hanger, that I rescued from a dump site. I painted the objects, connected them by wire, and embroidered the grille. The motif is inspired by a symmetrical motif in Andalusian tiles. As a means to circumvent language barriers and focus on the visual experience, I’ve created a language of graphic bars that are woven into my artwork. The graphic bars are "blanks" representing the words of the narration; viewers are invited to fill them in with individualized interpretations.
