LAST MILE

ARTIST Sarah Crofts
FERAL ECOLOGIES Wild grape, Ivy (various), Ailanthus, Virginia Creeper, Grass, Trumpet Vine, Bacteria, People
LOCATION Red Hook, Brooklyn, USA
CONCEPT Last Mile documents the disappearing wild interstitial spaces and the built geometries of real estate "development" in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Motivated by numerous demolition and construction projects in 2019, Crofts began to make lumen prints around the rapidly gentrifying neighbourhood in situ, pressing sheets of analogue black and white photo paper against newly erected construction barriers and old overgrown fences. The archivally unsound lumen prints echo the predicament of “development” that transforms neighbourhoods while displacing and replacing its people, as well as Crofts’ unsteady memories of the landscape as a long-time resident. Rethinking documentary photography in terms of touch, trace and forensic index, each print represent a moment of contact and intimacy with the ecosystems that reclaim inactive sites, whose fates are as fragile as the unstable prints.
