OFRENDA,
A WALKING
PROJECT

ARTIST Maria Villanueva
FERAL ECOLOGIES Wildflowers, Plants, Birds, Insects, Trash, Tires, Vagabonds
LOCATION Denon, Texas
CONCEPT Exploring the city of Denton, Texas on foot, Villanueva discovered small, forgotten corners of the city where wildlife and discarded human-made objects thrived. This particular space, next to the freeway, is bounded such that it cannot be inhabited by humans, yet cannot be given back to nature completely. Inspired by Guy Debord’s idea of Psychogeography, which describes the psychological experience of exploring the city and illuminating forgotten, discarded, and marginalized aspects of hyperlocal communities, Villanueva creates a closed-loop path on this plot of land to keep it company. Forming new connections, creating new routes on this land, she leaves behind ordinary ways of navigating the city and urban natural landscape.
