FICTIONAL MOTHS

ARTIST Vega Brennan
FERAL ECOLOGIES Moths, Technologies Gone Wrong
LOCATION Baldwinholme, Carlisle, Cumbria
CONCEPT Fictional Moths anticipates the evolution of moths in the Solway Firth, where improperly discarded technologies create an altered environment. This ongoing series is based on an incident where TV sets, bathroom mirrors, speakers and vacuum cleaners were dumped in a nearby wood, as well as discussions with entomologist Dr Liz Still from the local Watchtree Nature Reserve. Developed with Rorschach ink blot paintings, Brennan uses colours and forms that connect to ideas of sickness, pollution, corruption, and otherness, combined with a gestural, performative process where the final outcome is as unexpected as the evolutionary passage of the Solway moths in the face of fly-tipped technologies.
