ARTIST Henry Haoyu Wang
FERAL ECOLOGIES Soil, Stone, Tree Leaf, Animal Waste, Feather, Fungus, Tree Branches
LOCATION Guapamacátaro, Michoacan, Mexico
CONCEPT Over two weeks at Guapamacátaro Art & Ecology, Wang collected ecological materials from the surrounding yard. These materials — which include soil, plant material, stones, animal waste, and feathers — were collected over short distances and periods in 6 petri dishes. 1230 electron microscope pictures were taken of these materials, and packaged as a dataset, trained with styleGAN2 and used to generate an AI model. The result is a collection of generative work in which the microscopic landscape of Guapamacátaro resounds in unexpected ways, and machine learning creates a new kind of ferality where the difference between original microscopic image and generated image is imperceptible to the layperson’s eye.
